It is vital to us at Urbis Design that we have environmental responsibility at the core of our business.
Concrete is usually seen as negative in this respect, due to the high energy input during cement manufacture. This can be the case where concrete is cast in a large mass, and large amounts of cement are required.
As part of a our sustainability ethos we are now working with GGBS and RGF to help replace percentages of cement and sand. We are committed to constantly improving ways we can help combat climate change and out own green mentality.
Ground Granulated Blast Slag (GGBS) is a by product that can be recycled and used to make an environmentally friendly alternative to concrete. This glassy granular material is produced by quenching molten iron slat from the blast furnace into water or steam. This Material can replace about 70 to 80% cement, and improves the durability of the concrete. Another advanced of the blast furnace slag is that the production process emits less amount of heat for hydration.
Recycled Glass (RGF) can be used as a partial replacement to sand, due to the similarities between their physical and chemical properties. Crushed glass is also an eco-friendly product as it is a recycled product and not quarried. The company that we are working with has recycled a massive 250,000 tonnes of glass to date
GRC uses far less cement, since the special glass fibres distributed throughout the mix form a stiffening matrix that greatly increases the strength of the material, allowing for only 10-15% of the cement use that would be needed in a conventional poured concrete item. The resultant much lower energy requirement for GRC items is an important element in its environmental credentials.
With lighter weights come reduced handling costs, and the lifespan of the materials are greatly extended, again saving energy.
At our company, we strive to ensure that our customers receive their items in the quickest and most efficient way possible. That is why we use a local FORS Gold courier to deliver all our items.
We understand the importance of being environmentally friendly and have recently adopted a policy of using recycled cardboard to wrap all our products. This helps us to ensure that our carbon footprint is kept to a minimum.
At our workshop we are proud of our biomass Windhager boiler which uses locally sourced wood from the Halifax estates to supply our heating. Our water supply comes from a rainwater harvesting system fed from our workshop roof.
We believe that by making small changes, we can make a big impact on the environment.
